A Celebration of Life for Tom “Pops” Urban will be at 2pm, on Friday, November 20, 2020 at Cedar Point Church in Claremore, OK. Tom peacefully went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, November 11, 2020 surrounded by his family. He was 60.
Tom was born in Reno, Nevada on July 7, 1960. He was adopted by William and Ascencion Urban. He had one older sister, Jo Anne, who was also adopted. Tom grew up in Reno, NV. He attended St. Alberts the Great, Catholic School through 8th grade. He was president of the Altar Boys, overseeing their roles during Mass. He continued on to Bishop Manogue Catholic High School through Sophomore year and finished his education at Reno High School, graduating in 1979. As a child, Tom was involved in many activities. He sang with The Sierra Boys’ Choir, performed Tap dance recitals, was a member of the Cub Scouts, and played the accordion. He won a performance award for “Spanish Eyes” on the accordion. Later in his high school years, his love for mechanics and building structures developed. In his senior year, he and his construction class finished building a custom home that is still standing today on Mayberry Drive in Reno, NV. He and his best friend, Tom Mueller, signed a dollar bill and sealed it in the wall.
December 1980, Tom enlisted in the United States Air Force with basic training at Lackland AFB in San Antonio, TX Squadron 3704 Flight 552. He completed his tech training at Lowry AFB receiving certification as an Aircraft Armament Systems Specialist. He was then stationed at Kirkland AFB in Albuquerque, New Mexico as a weapons mechanic. He received an Honorable Discharge in 1983.
Tom returned to Reno in 1983. He met his wife, Terri, that year. They went on their first date August 18, 1983 and fell in love. They enjoyed going dancing, 4-wheeling in his truck, exploring the mountains, and attending air race shows. He loved being a father to Jason, Terri’s son, who he later adopted. Tom and Terri were married May 21, 1985. Daughter, Rachel, was born June 1985, and son, Billy, March 1989. His family was complete.
Tom’s love for airplanes continued to grow. In 1989, the family moved to Tulsa, Oklahoma, where he attended Spartan School of Aeronautics. He graduated December 1990, with an Assoc degree in Aviation Maintenance Technology with an Airframe & Power Plant license. He was hired on at American Airlines February 4, 1991, where he remained employed until his passing.
Through the years, Tom and his family shared many happy times with their favorite being at the lake, camping. He enjoyed traveling, watching OU football, going to Nascar races, collecting WWII memorabilia, and of course, airplanes. His most cherished memories came from hanging out with his family and friends.
Tom is survived by his wife Terri, children, Jason Urban, Rachel Baker and husband Robbie, Billy Urban and wife Janelle, grandchildren, Bryce and Payton “PJ” Urban, Brandon, Wyatt, Tyler, and Kolby Baker, Kaydee and Grace Jones, Brynlee, Blake, and Jaden Urban, great grandchildren, Hazlee and Delilah Baker, best friend and brother, Tommy Mueller, nieces, Heather Stebbins and Jaimmie Cook, nephew, Nicholas Stebbins, and multiple cousins. Tom was preceded in death by his parents, sister, dearest Uncle Bob and Aunt Lucy and several aunts, uncles, and cousins.
