Phillip Michael Yowaish, age 65, of Claremore, Oklahoma, passed away Sunday, May 22, 2022, at home with his wife Kathy and other family members nearby.
A memorial service for Phillip will be held, Thursday, June 2, 2022, at 2:00 pm, at Claremore Assembly of God with Pastor Dave Mewbourne officiating.
Philip was born on July 3, 1956, in Mason, Michigan, to his parents, Phillip and Dora Mae Yowaish. He grew up in the Grand Rapids, Michigan area. After he completed school, he traveled to Traverse City, making it his home for years. He came to Bartlesville, Oklahoma in 1985 where he resided until 2015, when he moved to Claremore, Oklahoma.
After moving to Oklahoma, he built a small off-grid cabin in southeast Oklahoma. He would lay in bed and listen to the water flow in the falls just below the cabin. He spent many years four wheeling through the canyons with friends and enjoying the peace of wooded land.
He worked for many years in Tulsa area hospitals, including Hillcrest Medical Center and OSU Medical Center from where he retired.
He met Kathy online in late 2014 on ourtime.com (LOL). They dated for a year and were married in Claremore at Kathy’s dads house by Pastor, Dave Mewbourne. They spent the next few years remodeling their home, designing and building flower gardens in their yard and traveling to his cabin in southeast Oklahoma. They also traveled to Michigan each year for the Cherry Festival and to visit friends in Traverse City; Tim and Lisa, Ed and Katie, Ike and Juan just to mention a few.
He loved leisurely traveling – stopping on a whim for an estate sale, a roadside overlook or an interesting spot never seen before.
His second passion was growing, designing and planting flowers. He had a small landscaping side business for years. He would grow his plants from seed in his greenhouse and designed and planted beds and containers for Adams Golf Course and numerous banks in the Pawhuska area.
He loved to play golf on any and every course he could. He had many golfing partners and was likely playing with God 5 minutes after he was gone. He loved music – especially 60s & 70s rock and folk/bluegrass music. He had libraries on recordings. He wore headphones in the yard or greenhouse, with the favorites streaming. Wherever he was, there was music in the background.
He simply loved life and his friends.
In November 2019, he suffered a severely debilitating stroke, from which his body never recovered. On Sundays he would listen to Claremore Assembly of God’s online services and still traveled every summer to Traverse City for a few days. He convalesced at home with Kathy and in the last months assisted by the caring staff of Compassus Hospice.
Philip is survived by his wife Kathy Hentz-Yowaish of Claremore, Oklahoma; step-children, Cortney Hentz-Buckely and wife Tammy of Guthrie, Oklahoma, Joel Hentz and wife Fran of Nowata, Oklahoma, and Lorin Hentz of Claremore, Oklahoma; mother Dora Mae DeRoos of Grand Rapids, Michigan; sisters, Patricia Babcock and husband Jerry of Hastings, Michigan, Helen Calkins of Big Rapids, Michigan and Vickie Bergstrom and husband Mike of Sparta, Michigan; brother, John Yowaish and wife Mary Jo of Grand Rapids, Michigan; six grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
