Lorene was born to Clarence and Arttie Hopkins on April 23rd, 1931 in Hollister, California. At a young age the family moved to Missouri where Lorene and her siblings attended grade school in Reed Springs-Junction. From an incredibly young age Lorene learned how to care for others. Her mother passed away of Tuberculosis when Lorene was only 8 years old. Though her family faced hardship, they lived a grand life filled with love for one another. A love that she would eventually come to share with O.L Bickford. She met the love of her life in Sterling, Kansas where they attended school together and were married on October 12th, 1950. O.L went on to serve his country while Lorene waited for her forever love to return to her. They would eventually settle in Tiawah, Oklahoma where they would become a family of four. Gary Arlen born April 13, 1952 and Donnie Lee born June 7, 1953. Shortly after they had their two sons, O.L would be stricken with Polio. Lorene would find herself caring for two young children and a husband, who was now unable to walk. Caring for others, a role she was already so familiar with from such a young age. Lorene was a talented woman that enjoyed cooking, baking and painting. She even attempted to teach her grandchildren to paint when they were young. The smell of freshly baked pie always filled the air in their home. She made the best Strawberry pie! As the family grew, Lorene took the role of Grandma to new heights. She and Grandpa loved to travel and took Grandchildren to various places from Branson, Missouri all the way to Germany. Her favorite pastime eventually became shopping. She shared this affinity with her daughter-in-laws and grandgirls! Grandma was stylish, she loved the color yellow and a good leopard print! She had a different broach, purse, and pair of shoes for every outfit she wore. Her heart was pure. She loved to talk on the phone and could easily be in conversation for hours. So many times, the line would be busy when you tried to reach her home. We just knew, Grandma was talking to someone and it may be a while before we could get through. She was a presence that was larger than life to so many. She will be missed beyond measure and her smile and onery spirit will live on forever in the hearts that know and love her so deeply.
