Obituary

Leo Stephen Hilinski was born in Erie, PA on September 2, 1925, to Frank and Angela Hilinski. He graduated from The Carnegie Institute of Technology with a BS in Mechanical Engineering. He then served in WWII as a Flight Navigator Mechanic, 2nd Lieutenant, in the Army Air Corp. Leo married the love of his life, Norma McGrath, December 27, 1978. The love they shared was a fairy tale. They were inseparable, and he adored her more than life itself. If you ever saw them together, you knew their love was one of a kind.

Leo owned, consulted, and worked for many chemical companies including Cherokee Nitrogen/N-REN in Pryor, OK, Agrico Chemical in Tulsa, OK, El Dorado Chemical in El Dorado, AR, and Lacamus Laboratories in Portland, OR.

To know Leo was a blessing. He always started a conversation with a bold “Well…Hello (insert your name here)”. His voice was strong and inviting. Leo’s smile was bright and infectious. He was a hardworking, God- fearing man who lived an honest and minimalistic life. The gentle giant we all love was the best listener and always had the right answers when we needed them. He was the calm to our storm and never judged…at least to our faces. Leo was a very well-respected man among his peers, friends, family, and members of the community. He spent his days outside cultivating his land by planting new trees and composting to make his own natural fertilizers. Leo loved nature and had a great admiration for the things God created. Bird watching was a joy for him. He was an avid reader and never missed an issue of the Wall Street Journal. He spent his spare time traveling to some of the most beautiful places on earth, his most cherished trips being with family…especially his bride. Of all the amazing characteristics Leo displayed daily, the one we will all cherish the most was his ability to show love. He was an amazing example of a strong, loving, tenderhearted man who never ever missed a chance to tell you how much you meant to him. Love was in his eyes. It was in his hugs. It was in his presence every single minute of every single day.

When Leo left this earth in the early morning hours of January 17, 2023, he was at his home in his warm bed surrounded by family who loved him. We are rejoicing at the thought that he has now joined Norma in heaven, and they are living out the rest of their story.

Leo was preceded in death by his wife, Norma, and children, Kay and Rob; great grandchild, Gabriel; parents, Frank and Angela; siblings Tony, Ann, and Bernadette. Lovingly survived by his sister, Sister Mary Ursuline (Aunt Jo Jo); children: Jody, Judy and Marty, Mike and Joyce, Carol, Nan, Debbie and Earle, 21 grandchildren, 47 great grandchildren, and many dear friends.

A memorial service will be held at St. Cecilia’s Catholic Church in Claremore, Ok on January 28, 2023 at 10am with a reception for friends and family to follow. Leo would want us to end his memorial with this “Tell them I love them!
