Joyce Carol (Brunson) Hinds

April 1, 1940 ~ November 14, 2022 (age 82) 82 Years Old

Joyce Carol (Brunson) Hinds, age 82, a resident of Claremore, Oklahoma, passed from this life on Monday November 14, 2022.

Joyce was born in Inola, Oklahoma, April 1, 1940, to Odes and Ora (Hopkins) Brunson. As a young child she moved with the family to Deming, New Mexico, for a time. At age 9, she and the family returned to Inola where she attended Inola Schools through the 8th grade. She graduated 8th grade as salutatorian of her class receiving many Awards of Honor and Citizenship during her school years.

On October 15, 1954, she married the love of her life, William (Bill) Robert Hinds. Joyce and Bill settled in Claremore, Oklahoma, for most of their married life. Here, over the next 50 years, they raised their family and provided care for more than 100 foster children. One of their first foster daughters, Alice Harmon, has remained their ‘special daughter’ still to this day. Once they were in the home, Joyce claimed each foster child as her own for life. Many of the older children they had in their home have remained in contact with Joyce; the younger children were possibly too young to remember. They all, however, remained in Joyce’s heart and prayers forever. Joyce loved to cook, sew clothes for the girls, collect dolls, and read the Bible as well as other books. However, her greatest love was her family. More than anything else, she loved with all her heart.

Joyce taught students at Claremore Christian Academy for six (6) years in the 1980’s. Prior to this time, she was a teacher’s assistant at Sequoyah Elementary in the Reading Lab helping children develop their reading skills. She enjoyed being with these children lovingly encouraging them to always do their best.

She attended the Church of God (7th Day) during her lifetime accepting roles as Sabbath School teacher, Youth Sponsor, Children’s Sponsor, and cooking for family camps. She also participated in the women’s group of the church. She would tell experiences of how she learned so many things from the older women of the church. As she grew older, she became a mentor to some of the younger women, teaching mostly by example, of how to be a Godly woman, a good wife, and a mother, and to serve with love. Joyce’s faith and trust in God helped her through difficulties she faced in her life. She knew her Heavenly Father was in control of her life. She had such a good listening ear. Many would come to Joyce needing her wisdom and guidance. She will be missed.

Joyce is survived by her husband, William, of the home and her children: Jeanette (Bob) Cowan of Claremore, OK; Robert (Lisa) Hinds of Collinsville, OK; Cindy Bland of Claremore, OK; Brent (Marie) Hinds of Catoosa, OK; Tim (Lisa) Hinds of Marion, OR; Nick Hinds of Tulsa, OK; Leona Hinds of Seattle, WA; Chip (Mary) Hinds of Tahlequah, OK; 33 grandchildren, 57 great-grandchildren with two more on the way, and one (1) great-great grandchild on the way. She is also survived by her brother and sister-in-love, Lavell and Lavetta (Riggs) Brunson and her sister, Marilyn (Larry) Trude, along with many nieces, nephews, cousins, and church family & friends.

Joyce was preceded in death by her parents, Odes and Ora Brunson; her mother and father-in-love, Will & Minnie Hinds; her sisters: Pauline Lee, Maggie Hazelwood, Kathryn Anderson, Evelyn Krigbaum Reynolds; her brothers: Garland (Guy) Brunson, Jimmy Brunson, and Mike Brunson.

Joyce leaves a legacy of Faith, Hope and Love – the greatest of these is Love.
