Jessie Evelyn Cardin Spurgeon passed away peacefully on July 20, 2022.
Evelyn was born to the late Phillip and Alice Cardin on October 8, 1933, in Pawhuska, OK and was the oldest of twelve children. She was born in the great depression years and said that the wages were 50 cents to a dollar a day if you were lucky enough to even have a job. Her father worked for the WPA, and her mother was a homemaker. They had a wood burning stove for heat, and a wood burning range to cook on. There was no running water in the house, so they had to use an outhouse. They had no refrigerator, just an old ice box. They had a pump set on a cement block to get their drinking water. They raised pigs to butcher, and they had two or three riding horses. Also, they pastured cattle for money that was used to buy food for the family. Evelyn rode one of the horses to get the mail and to a neighbor’s house to buy eggs. She attended schools at Pershing, Neloganey and Barnsdall. She was reborn into Gods family through personal faith in Jesus Christ the Lord at the age of sixteen. After her high school years on June 12, 1953, she married Jack L. Spurgeon, Sr.
Her husband was a minister for twenty-five years in Oklahoma and in Arizona and back to Oklahoma again. That included three and a half years as house parents at the Boys Ranch Town in Edmond, Oklahoma where she helped with the troubled boys there and she also cooked lots of food for them. She also performed nursing work during these years at hospitals and later as an in-home nursing care helper to the infirm and elderly. Plus, she also took children to church camps including Falls Creek Retreat, where she was a Counselor. Evelyn had been Sunday School Teacher, WMU leader, Mission Leader with many certification awards in all areas of church work.
She attended college thirty-six years after graduating high school and received an Associate in Arts Degree from NEO. Evelyn also received a Certified Nursing Assistant certificate. She worked at Bass Baptist Hospital in Enid, OK, Perry Hospital, Jane Phillips at Bartlesville, OK. Then for nursing services in homes of Medicare patients in and around Grove, OK.
When she retired, she enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She loved spending the holidays with her family.
Besides her parents she was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years Jack L. Spurgeon, Sr.; one son Jack Spurgeon, Jr.; five siblings Earl Cardin, Stanley Cardin, Cookie Manning, Ted Cardin and Todd Cardin; and one great-grandson Gabriel Wimberley.
