James Ignatius Palmer (Jim) was born in Pittsfield, MA, on May 24,1954 to parents, James Ingram Palmer and Jane Granfield Palmer. Jim had great pride in his military heritage. His grandfather served in WWI, his father served in WWII, he and his brothers served in the Air Force. The commitment to service and Nation was passed down as his sons also served in Air Force and Army.
Jim graduated from St Joseph High School in 1972. He couldn’t wait to join the military, immediately entering United States Air Force where he served 12 years. While stationed at Altus Air Force Base Jim met and married Linda Shaffer in May 1975. During his military career he was stationed in Altus, OK, Colorado Springs, CO, Okinawa, Japan and Lubbock, TX.
Jim and his family made Claremore, OK, their home in 1984. Jim has always had a passion for art and education. Jim pursued his Master’s degree with completion in 1993 from Northeastern State University. Jim held many roles within in the Claremore Public School System starting as an Art Teacher for middle school, moving on to an Elementary School Principal and finalizing his tenure as the Assistant Superintendent. He then moved to Vinita to serve in the role as Superintendent of Schools, where he retired 2014.
Jim’s passion for art and serving others has touched many. Jim used art as a way of communicating his love and appreciation to others. If you’ve ever seen one of his hand-drawn envelopes, you have felt his heart. Jim was many things to many people, all those that know him have their own special stories to share. By his daily example, he showed the importance of taking care of the ones he loved. He believed that family came before everything else and having each other to lean on is what mattered the most. He was a wonderful husband, father, and grandfather.
He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Linda (Claremore, OK), and children, Kelly Palmer (Dallas, Texas), Shamus Palmer (Claremore, OK), Jeremiah and wife Sarah (Cabot, Arkansas), Seth and wife Carly (Owasso, OK).
