GARRY WAYNE RUSSELL
Funeral services for Garry Wayne Russell will be held on Thursday, December 23, 2021, 9:00 a.m. at the Faith Baptist Church in Claremore, Oklahoma with Pastor Kirk Jackson officiating. Garry left his earthly home on December 16, 2021, in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He was 74.
Garry Wayne Russell was born on July 7, 1947, in Claremore, Oklahoma to Norman Wayne Russell & Wanda Lee (Ary) Russell. He attended Sequoyah Public Schools. After leaving high school, Garry proudly chose to serve in the Army National Guard from May 1965 until January 1979. He earned many awards while in military service including a Star of Valor in 1975. Later in life, Garry completed his education and earned both a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Social Work. While in college, he started the first Oklahoma drug court in Mayes County, and the model he developed has been widely used across the state. Garry earned a certification as an international certified alcohol and drug counselor (ICADC) and was highly respected in his field, helping many people to maintain success in their recovery. One of his passions was raising and training thoroughbred horses. Garry was an avid sports fan of the OU Sooners, St. Louis Cardinals, and the Dallas Cowboys, and watched their games whenever possible.
Garry was preceded in death by his mother and father, grandsons Gary Martin, Jr. and Garrett Martin, and his brother-in-law, Bill Cherry.
Garry is survived by his special friend and companion, Claudia Plett of Inola, OK; children Gary Martin, Sr. of Chelsea, OK, Alice Rue and husband Bob of Chelsea, Amber Jobe and husband Nathan of Big Spring, TX, and Katelyn Russell of Fort Gibson, OK. His sisters JoAnn Cherry of Claremore, OK, Jeanette Knorr of Rancho Cordova, CA, Faith Anglen and husband Ortha Dale of Sperry, OK, and brother Dale Russell and wife Susie of Strasburg, VA, along with seven grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews and a host of friends.
Family will receive friends on Wednesday, December 22, 2021, from 5 – 8 p.m. at the Rice Funeral Service in Claremore.
