Coy Hildebrand

July 18, 1937 ~ November 2, 2021 (age 84)

Services for Coy Wayne Hildebrand will be Tuesday November 9, 2021, at 2pm at Claremore Assembly of God. David Mewbourne will share words of comfort. Burial will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery under the direction of Rice Funeral Service. Coy passed away at the age of 84 on November 2, 2021
Coy was born in Gracemont, Oklahoma on July 18, 1937. The 4th child and only son of James Henry and Goldie Leona (Drake) Hildebrand. As a child he enjoyed spending his days outside, running the creek and seeing what kind of trouble he could get into. Around 1946 the Hildebrand family moved from Gracemont to Claremore when they purchased the Will Rogers Drug Store at the bottom of the Will Rogers Hotel. He spoke of reading all the magazines he could get his hands on. Coy graduated from Claremore High School with the class of 1955. This would become a family tradition as Coy, his son David, all three of David’s children, and, so far, one great grandchild has graduated from Claremore High School.
After high school, Coy started seeing Mabel Francis Bell, a fellow classmate from Claremore High School and the two were wed on August 13, 1957, in Chandler, Oklahoma. After a trip to Texas for their honeymoon, Coy left to finish a short stint in the Navy. He was stationed in Maryland. During his time in the Navy, he never stepped foot on a boat. He did air traffic control from an aircraft.
After Coy returned to Claremore from the Navy, he and Mabel welcomed a son, David Wayne, in 1959. In 1965 they had a second son, Matthew Hildebrand who died shortly after his birth.
During David’s high school years Coy and Mabel were extremely active with the Claremore High School band. They helped haul instruments to and from games, worked concessions, and made sure everyone had a snack. Coy retired from Sunoco Oil in the early 1990’s then shortly after decided to run for office as City Treasurer of Claremore. He won and continued as city treasurer until 2004.
Once Coy became a papa in the 80’s his world became about the grandkids. Coaching soccer for the youngest two grandkids, cooking and going on softball trips with the oldest grandchild. If he could help it, he didn’t miss a game, a choir concert, or a school event. He also volunteered as the president for the Claremore soccer club for many years.
Sunday lunch is a tradition in the Hildebrand family. Every Sunday after church the whole family would come to Papa’s house for lunch. If you couldn’t make it, you needed to give at least a 24-hour notice. Coy made different things on Sunday’s. From roast beef, turkey, green chili enchiladas, spaghetti and meatballs, to fajitas grilled outside by the pool. The family always enjoyed finishing lunch with a special dessert. The top choices are Coy’s homemade banana ice cream, banana pudding and pineapple upside down cake. You were also never left looking far for an Oreo and a glass of milk.
Coy is preceded in death by his parents, James and Goldie Hildebrand, his wife Mabel Bell Hildebrand, son Matthew Hildebrand, sister Nellie Huff, and sister Verla Hollis.
He is survived by son David Hildebrand of Claremore, grandchildren, Tia Hildebrand Henson and husband Dustin of Claremore, Whitney Hildebrand and Ivan Cortes of Jenks, Matthew David Hildebrand and Ashley Budgick of Claremore. Great grandchildren; Braden, Logan and Peyton Henson, Noah Cortes, Kayla, Hailey and Avery Budgick and Miles Hildebrand. Two more great grandchildren are also on the way. His sisters: Louise Webb and Alieta Gunn of Claremore. As well as many nieces, nephews and friends.
Viewing will be on Monday November 8, at Rice funeral service from 5-8pm.
