A memorial service will celebrate the life of Billy Joe Kirkland at 1:00 p.m., on Monday, January 4th, 2021, in the Chapel at Rice Funeral Home in Claremore. Billy passed away on Wednesday, December 23, 2020, at the age of 67.
Billy was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma June 14, 1953, to parents Billy Wayne Kirkland and Jo Kathryn (Brandon) Key. He was the oldest of three children; he was raised and educated in the Catoosa/Tulsa area. On September 21, 1973, Billy married Brenda Joyce Henson in a ceremony in Tulsa; their union was blessed with three daughters, Mechelle, Kyla, and Allie.
Work was everything to Billy; he worked hard from a very young age to provide for his siblings and mother, then later his family. He held several positions from dishwasher to elevator operator, to finally a machinist as a fin tube operator. Billy was a hard worker and did not mind working extra shifts or hours.
Billy enjoyed hosting events at his home bringing family and friends together for cookouts where he enjoyed smoking meat. He loved watching the children play, swim, and treasured the conversations and company. Everyone was welcome, no matter who you were. He also enjoyed spending extra time at the casino and watching Westerns.
He was a kind person always willing to help friends and family and was a good friend to many. Billy was often described as a good man with a little ornery side.
Billy will be missed by all those who knew him. He is survived by his daughters Mechelle Richards and husband John of Catoosa and their children Randall, Kameron, Morgan, and Kaleb; Kyla and Randy Beach of Catoosa and their children Kelsi and Kaylan; Allie Shaw and husband Gregory of Collinsville; brother Mike Kirkland and wife Cooweesta of Skiatook; and numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, wife Brenda, and sister Gina.
